At Overlook Coffee Co., we believe that every cup of coffee tells a story. When enjoying specialty coffee, you are not just enjoying a great-tasting coffee; you take part in a journey that starts with a seed and ends in your cup. The specialty coffee movement embodies sustainability, ethical sourcing, meticulous care, and craftsmanship.
In this post, we take a deep dive into the practices that go into the specialty coffee. From the farms around the world where high-quality beans are grown to the roll that we in the ecosystem as small-batch coffee roasters. We find deep value in the specialty coffee movement and are excited to share how this practice values people, the environment, and the future of coffee.
The Seed of Sustainability: Sourcing Specialty Coffee
The journey of a cup of specialty coffee begins at the farm. The first step in ensuring a sustainable coffee future is by choosing specialty coffee beans that have been ethically sourced. We carefully select beans from farmers and importers who share our commitment to sustainability, ensuring that the beans we purchase are of the highest quality and grown using responsible practices.
Our specialty coffee is sourced from small-scale farmers and cooperatives who prioritize sustainable practices. These farmers are paid fair wages for their crops, enabling them to reinvest in their farms, communities, and the environment. By paying above-market prices for their beans, we create an incentive for farmers to use sustainable farming methods, protect biodiversity, and care for the land for generations to come.
This goes beyond just the financial aspect—it empowers coffee farmers, improves their quality of life, and fosters long-term, transparent relationships between farmers, roasters, and consumers.
Sustainability in Every Step: From Growing to Processing
Many of our coffee partners practice agroforestry, a sustainable farming method where coffee is grown under the canopy of trees. This practice helps to maintain healthy ecosystems by reducing soil erosion, promoting biodiversity, and preserving water resources. Agroforestry also helps farmers adapt to the changing climate, as trees provide shade that helps coffee plants thrive in hotter conditions.
Proper care during each stage of growth—such as pruning, shade management, and effective water management—is essential. Additionally, harvesting the coffee cherries at their peak ripeness, followed by careful processing methods like wet or dry processing, helps preserve the unique characteristics of the beans.
Roasting with Purpose: Small Batch & Fluid Bed Roasting
Once the beans have been carefully harvested and processed, they are sent to our roastery, where they undergo the final transformation—roasting. At Overlook Coffee Co., we believe that the roasting process plays a crucial role in preserving the sustainability of the coffee while also bringing out the unique flavors of each bean.
We use small batch roasting to ensure that each coffee is treated with care and precision. Small batch roasting allows us to have greater control and precision over the roasting process, ensuring that the coffee is roasted to perfection while minimizing waste. Our roast-to-order direct to consumer model ensure that coffee beans never go to waste getting stale on store shelves. By roasting in small batches, we maintain the highest standards of quality and freshness while minimizing our environmental impact.
One of the key aspects of our roasting process is the use of an all-electric fluid bed roaster. Traditional drum roasters can use a lot of energy and produce more emissions, but our fluid bed roaster is much more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Fluid bed roasting works by circulating hot air around the beans, evenly roasting them while using significantly less energy than conventional drum roasters. This results in a cleaner roast and a reduced carbon footprint, making it a perfect fit for our sustainability goals. Additionally, the purely convective heat transfer in fluid bed roasting preserves the natural flavors of the coffee, allowing us to showcase the distinct characteristics of each bean without compromising on sustainability.
Eco-Friendly Packaging: Reducing Waste and Supporting Sustainability
Sustainability is not just about the beans we source or how we roast them—it extends to how we package our coffee as well. We believe that every aspect of our business should reflect our commitment to the environment, which is why we use eco-friendly packaging for all of our coffee.
Our packaging is designed to be both practical and sustainable. Our coffee bags are made with recyclable material to help reduce waste (stay tuned to see how to appropriately recycle our bags).
By choosing packaging that is both protective and sustainable, we can ensure that your coffee arrives fresh without contributing to long-term environmental damage. We’re constantly looking for new ways to improve our packaging and reduce our carbon footprint, so your coffee experience can be as sustainable as it is delicious.
The Importance of Transparency: From Farm to Cup
At Overlook Coffee Co., we believe in transparency. We want you to know exactly where your coffee comes from, how it’s grown, and who is behind its production. Our commitment to transparency means that you can trust that every cup of Overlook Coffee is not only delicious but also responsibly sourced. We take pride in our relationships with farmers and importers, and we are dedicated to supporting their efforts to produce the best coffee possible while caring for the environment.
This transparency also means that we can track the impact of our sustainability efforts and continue to improve our practices over time. By holding ourselves accountable and sharing our journey with you, we hope to inspire other businesses and consumers to make more sustainable choices in the coffee industry.
Supporting a Sustainable Coffee Future
