  • Description:

This single-estate coffee was grown on the slopes of Mt. Monduli in northern Tanzania, combining Bourbon, Kent, and Blue Mountain varietals. Mondul Estate benefits from an ideal microclimate and rich volcanic soils, both of which contribute to the coffee’s vibrant character. Centrally washed and roasted with our omni profile, it offers a rich, full body with pronounced acidity. In the cup, expect vibrant notes of peach cola, rich molasses sweetness, and a distinctive black currant finish. Sweet, lively, and packed with character, this coffee shines across brew.

  • Product Info:

      Variety: Bourbon, Kent, Blue Mt.

Bourbon is a heirloom Arabica variety known for its sweetness, balanced acidity, and complex flavor profile, often featuring notes of chocolate and fruit. It originates from the island of Bourbon (now Réunion) and is prized for its cup quality. Kent is a selection from India, developed for its resistance to coffee leaf rust. It produces a clean, mild cup with good body and is commonly used in East Africa and Asia for its resilience and consistent performance. Blue Mountain is a variety of Typica grown primarily in Jamaica but also in East Africa. It's celebrated for its smooth, mild flavor, low acidity, and silky body.

      Process: Washed

The washed process, also known as the wet process, is a method used to remove the outer pulp and mucilage from coffee cherries before drying the beans. In this process, ripe cherries are first pulped to remove the outer skin, leaving behind the beans covered in mucilage. The beans are then fermented in water for a period of time, usually between 12 to 72 hours, depending on factors like altitude and temperature. During fermentation, enzymes break down the mucilage layer surrounding the beans. After fermentation, the beans are thoroughly washed to remove any remaining mucilage, leaving clean coffee beans ready for drying.

      Elevation: 1590-1800M

Elevation plays a crucial role in determining the quality and flavor profile of coffee beans. Generally, higher elevations are associated with better quality coffee. As coffee plants grow at higher altitudes, they face cooler temperatures, reduced oxygen levels, and increased exposure to sunlight. These conditions cause the coffee cherries to mature more slowly, allowing them to develop more complex flavors and a higher concentration of sugars.

      Roast: Light-Medium (Omni Roast)

                     Molasses,
                     Black Currant

A coffee profile, also known as a flavor profile or tasting notes, refers to the unique combination of flavors, aromas, and characteristics present in a particular coffee bean or blend. It encompasses a range of sensory attributes such as acidity, body, sweetness, bitterness, aroma, and aftertaste. Coffee profiles can vary widely depending on factors like the bean's origin, variety, processing method, roast level, and brewing technique.
  • Mondul Estate is located within the Masai community on the slopes of Mount Monduli, where an ideal microclimate and rich volcanic soils contribute to their coffee’s unique yet quintessentially Tanzanian profile. Founded in 1931, with new ownership in 2007, Mondul Estate aims to pair traditional methods with modern practices, with an emphasis on sustainability, technology, and community.

The estate uses biofuels and recycled compost wherever possible, investing in modern technology to measure and manage water usage, for example. Farm staff are of the local Masai community and live on the farm; during the harvest, 250 pickers from neighboring villages come for work, receiving pay, meals, and accommodation. Schooling, medical services, pension lands, and sports facilities are also provided.
